Since its inception, "Comp-Stat" has developed into the pre-eminent method of reporting and answering for increases in reported crimes in a timely and methodical manner. In the past, Police Departments would generally either be unaware of their spikes in certain index crimes, or they would not become aware of the increase until some time later, when, therefore, not being able to address the problem in a timely manner.
